On the edge of the National Park lies the Buitencentrum Drents-Friese Wold of Staatsbosbeheer. In this visitor centre, the exhibition Grenzeloos Wold can be seen, featuring information about the nature in the national park. Various activities organised, children can for example participate in the forest picnic and carrot pulling. There is also the possibility for meetings. At Brasserie IJgenweis, you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea and a delicious organic lunch.
Boswachterslab
Do you want to see what a ranger’s office looks like? Then come and have a look in the Boswachterslab! You will find discoveries from the ranger, such as bones, feathers, and skulls. But also books and work materials from the ranger and a map where you can note your own observations. A cabinet of curiosities and field station in one.
Location
Near Appelscha, directly along the N381. From the large car park, various marked routes start for cyclists (including MTB-ers), walkers, riders, and drivers.
The centre is a good starting point for a visit to the National Park Drents-Friese Wold, which includes well-known areas such as Aekingerzand (the Bare Dunes), Berkenheuvel, Prinsenbos, Canada, Dieverzand, and Veldhuizen. The National Park Drents-Friese Wold covers approximately 6,100 hectares. Staatsbosbeheer manages 4,000 hectares within the park and about 1,000 hectares in the surrounding area.
Barefoot path
Shoes and socks off, and off you go! Everyone can enjoy the Barefoot Path. What do you actually feel when walking barefoot in the forest? How does the mud feel, and the twigs, or how does the grass or the leaves feel? For children, there are also other fun paths such as the gnome path and a discovery tour of creepy crawlies.
Walking
From the centre, various walking routes start from 2.5 to 10 kilometres. A popular option is the fully paved family path, which is suitable for everyone who has some difficulty walking.
Cycling
At the Buitencentrum there is a charging point for electric bicycles. The Buitencentrum is located near junction 83 of the network of Zuidoost Drenthe. The Buitencentrum starts an MTB route, which is one of the most popular in the Netherlands.
Horse riding
Near the Buitencentrum there is a beautiful route for riders. There is an option to ride from this route towards the Buitencentrum, where a rest area for riders and drivers has been established. This allows for a visit to the Buitencentrum and the forest brasserie IJgenweis.
Dogs
In several places in the Drents-Friese Wold, dogs are allowed to run free. In other places, they must be on a lead. During the breeding season, Aekingerzand is off-limits to dogs.

We konden kiezen uit verschillende luxe broodjes.
Het info centrun is echt heel leuk en de mensen heel behulpzaam. De mensen in de bediening waren iets minder vrolijk, maar ach....

Vanaf het bezoekercentrum gaan er al veel verschillende wandelroutes het bos in. Voor de kleintjes is er een blotenvoetenpad en een kapouterpad te bezichtigen. Zo leuk en echt een aanrader!
In de giftshop echt hele leuke spulletjes en super vriendelijk personeel.
In het restaurant is het vaak wat druk, maar de kwaliteit ligt hoog en ik zit er dan ook graag, jummie!

Vanaf hier hebben wij de natteneuzen route gelopen van 7km. Deze is speciaal voor honden en mogen ook los. De route gaat door gevarieerde natuur. Wij vonden het een mooie route ,de route gaat door muil zand en door heuvelachtige bossen dus niet geschikt voor mensen die slecht te been zijn. Er staan enkele bankjes en picknicktafels langs de route . Op sommige stukken hoor je de autoweg dat is jammer maar dat hoor je op veel plekken in Nederland. Ze waren bezig bij het bezoekerscentrum dus daar zijn we nu niet binnen geweest.

Heerlijk om te wandelen daar, alleen konden we al snel geen bordje van t hondenpad meer vinden, dat was jammer
